Jeff Wells, Ain't It Cool, and others are reporting that Darren Aronofsky's The Wrestler has been awarded the Crying Monkey - I'm sorry, the Golden Lion - for best film at this year's Venice Film Festival (the film was only one of two English language films in competition at Venice this year).
This is great news for Aronofsky, whose last film (the woefully underrated The Fountain) was booed at Venice two years ago before being booed by audiences around the world by the end of the year. The win also cements star Mickey Rourke's comeback status, and no doubt makes the film one of the year's first serious Oscar contenders.
The film screens in Toronto next week and will be released on our shores by the end of the year.
